I BECAME A FATHER AT 18 AFTER MY MOTHER ABANDONED MY NEWBORN TWIN SISTERS. YEARS LATER, HE RETURNED WITH SUCH A RUDE DEMAND THAT IT LEFT ME PALE.
When I was 18, my mom gave birth to twin girls and then DISAPPEARED like we were a nuisance she could get rid of.
Without a note.
Without a warning.
Just left, leaving two newborns in a small apartment with me, a guy who still had college acceptance letters scattered across his room floor.
“You can’t with this,” said everyone. “Call social services.”
But I couldn’t stand imagining my sisters growing up in someone else’s house, wondering why nobody fought for them.
So I fought back.
EVERY DAY.
I traded my dream of being a surgeon for horrible jobs…
Warehouse shifts.
Handing out pizzas.
Clearing up some construction work .. anything to keep us afloat.
For seven years, my sisters called me “BUBBA” and snuggled against my chest during storms.
They wrote letters on my back while I read them bedtime stories.
THEY WILL NEVER FEEL ABANDONED. That has become my motto.
My mother ?
Silencio total.
SEVEN YEARS OF NOTHING.

Until yesterday, when I heard they KNOCK ON THE DOOR.
I opened it and felt my stomach sink.
My mother was there, like a stranger with my mother’s face.
