My daughter always begged me to let her stay with her grandfather, but after hearing a phrase she repeated, I decided to secretly return…

My seven-year-old daughter, Emily, had always been very close to my father, George.

After my mother died, Dad lived alone in our old family home. He was seventy-two years old, but he still did his own shopping, tended the garden, and baked Emily’s favorite apple pie every Sunday.

At first, I was happy that they were so close. However, over the last few months, Emily had started making the same request after every visit.

—Mom, can I stay at Grandpa’s again tonight?

Every time I told her no, she became strangely serious.

—But Grandpa is alone. He needs me to stay with him.

I allowed it several times. My father was someone I trusted completely, and it had never occurred to me that I had any reason to worry.

But Emily’s behavior soon began to change.

He stopped telling me what they did together.

“It’s a secret,” she said before quickly changing the subject.

One Sunday, when I went to pick her up, I noticed that the door leading to the second floor was locked. That door had never been locked before.

“Why is it closed?” I asked my father.

Her smile vanished immediately.

“There’s old stuff up there. It’s not safe for a child.”

Severe blunt trauma. Repeated blows.” Outside her room, I saw them—her father and his seven sons—smiling like they’d just claimed a prize. The detective muttered, “It’s a family issue. Our hands are tied.” I studied the mark on her skull and answered calmly, “Perfect. Because I’m not law enforcement.” What followed would never see a courtroom.
