The Plastic Bottle Trick: A Surprisingly Simple Laundry Hack

articleUseronApril 17, 2026

This is where the plastic bottle trick comes in. According to those who use it, placing an empty, tightly closed plastic bottle into the drum helps interrupt the way clothes wrap around one another. Instead of allowing fabrics to twist into one large knot, the bottle acts like a small barrier that breaks up their movement as the machine runs.

Because of that, the clothes may move more freely inside the drum. The bottle can help separate bulky pieces, reduce tight twisting, and allow water and detergent to spread more evenly through the load. In simple terms, it creates a kind of buffer between fabrics, helping prevent them from clumping together too tightly.

Anyone curious to try this method should do it carefully. The bottle should be clean, empty, and firmly sealed. A medium-sized water bottle is usually the most suitable option, since a very small one may not do much, while a large one could interfere too aggressively with the cycle. Once prepared, it can be placed directly into the drum with the laundry, and the machine can be used as normal.

There are, however, a few precautions worth keeping in mind. Thin or fragile bottles should be avoided because they may collapse during the cycle. It is also important not to overload the machine, since the trick works better when clothes have enough room to move. Delicate fabrics are not the best candidates for this method, as they are better protected in a laundry bag. The trick appears to be most useful with bulky items such as sheets, towels, and heavier garments that are more likely to tangle.

  3. joan on I returned from a Delta deployment and walked straight into the ICU. My wife lay there—so battered I barely recognized her. The doctor lowered his voice. “Thirty-one fractures. Severe blunt trauma. Repeated blows.” Outside her room, I saw them—her father and his seven sons—smiling like they’d just claimed a prize. The detective muttered, “It’s a family issue. Our hands are tied.” I studied the mark on her skull and answered calmly, “Perfect. Because I’m not law enforcement.” What followed would never see a courtroom.
